"Corporal punishment was permitted and frequently exercised by the teachers. There was one particularly fearsome character who terrified students by the apparent abandon with which he administered smacks on their faces, so much so that one boy swore that his ambition was to become a teacher in the ACS so that he could inflict similar punishment on the son of this teacher. Another sadist specialised in pinching the students under the armpit and gleefully rubbing their flesh between his fingers to cause excruciating pain.
... But there was one exception. This gentleman was a saint by comparison with the others. Each time we gave a correct answer to his question, he would reward us with five cets which would have bought us a plate of charkway teow with eggs, or a plate for two cents with no eggs. We loved and respected him. Mr Sundram was his name."" "
"Recently a teacher asked some of his bring young students what they thought their school was. We understand that their tacit answer is that a school is a recreation club for boys after their strenuous work at home."
"Another bright student of the lower class says that a ruler is used more for ruling the class than for ruling lines - since canes went out of fashion."
"Our teacher who says that 'silence is golden' and 'an empty Bessel makes the most sound' sometimes fails to see why we do not answer his questions."
ACS is a school that grows on you. Once you step within its portals not only do you transform lives but in doing so, you are yourself transformed. I was approached by Mrs Ponniah, the senior teacher at ACS Primary to lead at the weekly chapel services when my faith was at its lowest ebb, due to a personal crisis. As the weeks, months and years rolled by, God transformed me. My confidence grew and my faith was renewed. I moved on to head ACS (Junior) to contribute by nurturing and uplifting ACSians who years down the road still remember me. I am deeply touched by the memories they revive as they share their stints at ACS. The reward I have gained is intangible.
a. The strong parents' prayer group who rallied behind regularly to pray for our every need. b. Cairnhill Chapel was borne to provide a place of worship for parents whose sons had responded to our altar call during Religious Emphasis Week. Kampong Kapor Methodist Church provided the Chaplaincy to run the services as well as nurture the boys in their Sunday School classes. c. The Musicathon to raise funds to upgrade our facilities, supported by our ACSian TV personalities who made appearances to lend support. d. Most nostalgic was the move from Cairnhill to the present site of ACS (Junior) when we carried soil in our palms and walked in procession to Winstedt Rd to deposit the soil, linking the past to the present.
Adaptability, Confidence, Service
Resilience to see us through the toughest of times.
Dauntless... .confident and rising against all odds.
That ACSians having been bountifully blessed, may go forth and enrich others within and outside our portals. So that all may know of God’s goodness to ACS.
Keep the school flag flying and live up to our motto...THE BEST IS YET TO BE!
